Are you a slave to the sugar cycle?

I don't think sugar is evil but I do think it is important that we know how sugar affects our bodies. Many people, when tired, load up on sugary and starchy foods which have an immediate effect on raising your energy levels. Long term they are simply feeding a cycle which will leave them feeling low and worse a short time after. Take a look at the diagram below:

So by eating less quick release carbohydrate such as white pasta, white bread and choosing foods that release their energy more slowly, such as wholegrain brown rice, along with more lean proteins, plenty of leafy vegetables and healthy fats, you can maintain more consistent energy levels. I'm not saying don't eat sugar at all - that would be very hard given it is in fruits and vegetables from which we obtain vital nutrients. Just be aware of how it affects your body and eat accordingly. Since changing my eating habits I no longer get the post lunch slump.
